Microchips

Puppy-PuzzleEvery two (2) seconds a family pet is lost. Tragically, most never make it back home because their owners didn't identify them. Identifying your pet is vital. Microchipping prevents your pet from leaving home without it's identification. All animals arriving in the Rock Island County Animal Care and Control Shelter must be scanned upon entry, as mandated by Illinois State Law. They are also scanned before being surgically altered or euthanized.

What is a microchip?

Micro identification chips enable veterinarians, animal hospitals and shelters across the nation to provide pets with high-tech lifetime protection. The micro chip is a permanent form of identification, enabling us to identify pets should they be lost or stolen and allows for faster return to owners. Microchips are tiny transporters the size of a grain of uncooked rice. They are implanted under the pet's loose skin between the pet's shoulder blades. The process is quick and no more painful than a vaccination. Once registered, the owner's name and address is available on a regional or national database.

Have you ever lost a pet?
"It won't happen to me".

That's what most people think until their pet does something they've never done before . . . leaves home. The gate is left unlatched by mistake and your pet decides to explore. Do you realize just how much your pet means to you? Some people don't until it's too late.

In the majority of cases, owners of lost pets do everything they're supposed to do: Search the neighborhood, call and visit all of the area shelters, place ads in the paper, provide flyers to veterinarians, and hang "LOST-PET-REWARD" posters everywhere. In addition, you may also report a lost pet and to view a list of stray animals that have been picked up and brought to the shelter.

As a shelter we do the very best to locate owners, but if your pet has no form of identification, there's not much we can do.
